Here is a quick poll to understand what is your favorite packaging option for ZBasic. The reason for asking because I would like to propose a new package which is pin-compatible with a ZX-24 but is a 40 pin DIP package with 16 additional I/O pins. See the attached picture for the I/O layout of this package.

Additional features that could be included are:
  • A 8 pin DIL socket so you can choose different types of SPI EEPROM including a FRAM. A small adapter PCB can also be produced to convert from SMD to DIP packaging.
  • All the SPI I/O pins including the EEPROM chip select are available if the 8 pin socket is not used.
  • Selectable logic level or RS232 level output on COM1

I really like the idea of an extended zx24. I want all the support hardware built-in like the zx-24. I just want MORE I/O (muhahahahahah)

Great idea.

If you get i/o limited by the ATMega32, then maybe one of its larger brothers?

Just to be clear on my own posting and not misrepresent anything, there is not quite an extra 16 I/O pins. The breakdown is as follows:
  • 2 are reserved for logic level COM1 TX/RX
  • 1 is reserved for SPI EEPROM chip select and cannot be used for anything else
  • 3 are reserved for SPI bus (also on ZX-24 but less accessible
  • 3 (PD4, PD5, PD7) are on the ZX-24 but less accessible
  • 5 (PB1, PB2, PD2, PD3, PD6) are shared with other I/O pins in the ZX-24 and so are not really available
  • 2 (PB0, PB3) are not available on ZX-24

Nevertheless I think the better accessability of SPI bus, logic level COM1, and another ten I/O pins makes this a worthwhile idea.

mikep,

I sort of like your idea because the funky need to be BX-24 compatable makes using the "extra" pins on the ZX-24 difficult to manage. I like the better access to the SPI buss lines.

However, the 40 pin format is HUGE Confused and uses much real estate in cases where real estate is at a premimum. Ideally I would like to see some sort of small SMD ZX in the 44 pin package. To me, this would be a killer.

Vic, this announcement of the ZX-44 was posted 4 days before you joined: http://www.zbasic.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=102

Well, I agree. To a degree. I could use the SPI, but it is not that big a deal using a few of jumper wires to connect from the non-DIP header to the rest of the circuitry.

I would be tempted to keep it that wey so this portion of the hardware is backward compatible.

I was thinking that the 8 pins on each side could be "extra". The original 24 pins would be identical for the most part, and the extra 16 are pins 25,26,27, plus 13 others.

When setup in this manner, a development board could be compatible with BOTH the 24 and 40 pin formats.

This poll is still open (see beginning of thread) so you can still participate. The results so far are:
ZX-24 (2)
ZX-40 (1)
ZX-44 (0)
Extended ZX-24 (2)
