Is there any good hardware out there that can be easily interfaced to a ZX-xx and does Text-to-Speech well Question

I am working on a project that could benefit from some aural prompting. I have no experience with this sort of hardware. Confused

Any enlightenment will be appreciated.

Vic

among the many chips out there... the March issue of "Nuts 'n Volts" magazine has an article about a current chip. I don't have the magazine handy right now. Their website lists the article but it's of course not on-line for reading.

Circuit Cellar magazine has also done articles in the past on these chips.

Devantech produce a Text to Speech Module (SP03) http://www.robot-electronics.co.uk/shop/Speech_Synthesizer_SP032006.htm, there's a choice of Male and Female voices. I understand they have a number of distributors in the US that may be a little more convenient to your location.

Alternatively you could use something like the "SpeakJet" http://www.speakjet.com/, this is a little different as you need to build your speech from allophones. I understand that there is a chip that will do the conversion from Text to Allophone that would work with the speakjet.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Colin

Wow, that puppy is expensive. $102 at Acroname here in the States and 40 pounds from Devantech.

At that price my application can do without speech. Confused

The text to SpeakJet allophone converter chip is the TTS256 and can be found here: http://www.speechchips.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=19

I use the EMIC text to speech module from Parallax in my SMS/WX airfield weather stations.
Simple serial interface, ASCII text, but the option of inline phonetics if you want better control.
Check out my demo station- dial +64 21 076 3406.
That's runing on straight ASCII text to speech, no fiddling with phonetics.
Some background noise from the GSM modem pumping EMI into the EMIC, but that's my problem, not the EMIC.

Stuart.
