ZX-40 4 port RS232 "Super Com Z" can be used for any application needing 1 or more comports. I used this schematic to generate a PCB for home automation. In my home automation system, I connect serially
to a PLC (powerline controller Insteon 2414s), a 2" x char multicolor LED message sign (BetaBrite - Sam's club), an email/Cell Phone SMS alert widget (I-connector from connectone.com), a ZX-24 Web Server using Netmedia's SitePlayer and a Caller-ID modem. You can "stack" the "Super Com Z's" for more serial ports. Who said "serial is dead!"

ExpressPCB & ExpressSch. The first "go around" Rev 1.0 was on a double layer PCB (3.8" x 2.5"). It was probably one of the most dense non surface mount boards that my neighbor and I have constructed in years. Other than a few minor clearance problems everything fit on the first prototype. Laughing

You are RS-232-rich!

My Home Automation system has an EdgePort USB to serial 8 ports. I don't use all 8.
I use HomeSeer on a PC to control X10 things, Dallas 1-wire for temperature/humidity sensors via DS9097U serial interface, Infrared to serial RS232 for catching interactive commands from the living room TV. Web server on PC. PC video goes to TV aux-in for surfing the web from the couch, using on-screen TV guide that I wrote, slide shows, etc. talking caller ID (another serial port). Now also have SageTV for free TiVo-like thing.

Heavily used every day. I have several years of evolved software in this thing!

I'd be interested in any ZBasic code you have for interfacing with the 2414S. I'm working on a couple of HA projects. One translates between various PLC and RF devices (all of which use serial interfaces) and the other is oriented more towards direct RF input with an RF receiver but still will interface with most of the same PLC devices. Both can optionally use Lantronix XPort instead of the main serial port.

I've used 6P4C modular connectors for all but the main serial port.

Always on the lookout for a good modular connector. What are these?

What do others use?

Any enlightenment will be appreciated

Mouser P/N 154-6413 and 154-6414.

I have pictures of the two boards. I'll post them to a new thread later today. See the ZX-40 Development Board? thread in the ZX-40 forum for one of them and the ZX-24 Development Board? thread in the ZX-24 forum for the other.
